Kästle FX 86 (Model 20/21)

The Kästle FX 86 is a light and lively all-mountain ski that is happiest making quick direction changes, shorter to medium-radius turns and generally getting on with the job without demanding much attention from its rider. At 86 mm underfoot and without metal reinforcement, it is not built for maximum-speed charging or deep powder. Its strengths lie elsewhere: quickness, maneuverability and easy turn initiation.

The TRI construction combines a wood core with a fibreglass wrap. The result is low weight and a lively feel with plenty of snap out of the turn. Compared with the metal-reinforced MX and DX models, the FX 86 feels less serious and more willing to change direction. You don't need to bully it into a turn — tip it onto the edge and it gets on with things.

Low camber, tip rocker and hook-free construction at both ends add to its easy-going handling. The FX 86 is particularly good at shorter turns and can change rhythm and turn shape without requiring much effort. On groomers it is perfectly happy carving clean arcs, while the 13.9-metre radius in the 169 cm length makes it fairly clear that long, high-speed turns are not the main attraction.

Off piste, it works well enough in softer snow, trees and broken resort terrain, where its low weight and willingness to turn are useful. At 86 mm underfoot, however, it is never going to offer serious flotation in deep powder. The lack of metal also means it does not have the same high-speed composure as a heavier, stiffer ski. Push it hard through rough snow and its limits become apparent fairly quickly.

That is not a criticism so much as a description of what the ski is designed around. The FX 86 prioritises quickness, maneuverability and a playful feel. For everyday resort skiing, shorter and medium-radius turns and the occasional trip away from the piste, it is a very capable tool. If your idea of a good day involves long, fast turns through chopped-up snow or regular deep-powder missions, there are better skis for the job.

Summary:

A light and very quick ski built around short to medium turns, easy handling and a playful character rather than outright stability. The Kästle FX 86 is forgiving, easy to initiate and capable of handling both groomers and softer snow off piste. It has better-suited competitors for deep powder or high-speed charging through rough terrain. If you want a light ski that moves easily from edge to edge and doesn't make life unnecessarily complicated, the FX 86 makes a lot of sense.
