Kästle FX 106 HP (Model 20/21)

The Kästle FX 106 HP is a serious freeride ski for skiers who value stability and flotation when the snow gets soft. With 106 mm underfoot, a relatively long 20.4 m radius at 184 cm, and a low-camber profile with raised tips and tails, it is designed to stay composed at speed while giving you plenty of support in deeper snow.

Unlike the metal-laminated construction used on some skis in the range, the HP version uses Kästle's TRI Tech construction, wrapping the wood core in a carbon-fiberglass weave. The result is a relatively light construction with plenty of torsional stiffness and a solid, responsive feel. Hollowtech 3.0 in the tip helps reduce vibration and keeps the ski smooth when the surface gets rough.

The FX 106 HP is not a lightweight touring ski pretending to be a freeride ski. It is a downhill-oriented freeride tool that comes alive when you can open up the terrain. The combination of width, stability and a fairly long turn radius makes it particularly convincing in soft snow and at higher speeds. The low camber also keeps the ski predictable in variable terrain, while the raised tips and tails help it stay on top rather than getting buried in powder.

Despite its freeride focus, it can still carve surprisingly well on piste. Just don't expect a 106 mm ski to suddenly become a race ski when the piste freezes.

This is a good choice for advanced and expert skiers, especially those skiing in regions where deep or soft snow is a regular part of winter. Stronger, heavier or more aggressive skiers will have plenty of ski to push against; lighter skiers may find the FX 106 HP more demanding.

Summary:

A stable, powerful freeride ski with 106 mm underfoot, strong flotation and a construction designed to stay composed when you start moving quickly. The Kästle FX 106 HP is at its best in soft snow and open terrain, where experienced skiers can take advantage of its stability and responsive feel. Not the choice for someone looking for an easy, lightweight ski — this one likes a bit of weight and commitment behind the turn.
