The Vena Cor is a pretty unusual ski. It has 100 mm underfoot, a swallowtail, a pointy nose, plenty of rocker and a -5 cm mount, so on paper it looks like something that should spend most of its time looking for soft snow. Then you put it on a groomer and it rips a 17 m turn. The ski gets right up on edge, hooks into the snow and comes around quickly. But unlike a conventional carver, you can break that turn whenever you feel like it. Slash the tail, smear across the piste, change direction and carry on. That is the fun of the Vena Cor. It has real bite when you want to carve, but it never feels trapped in the turn.

The shape is doing most of the work. The relatively short radius gives the Vena Cor its eager turn shape, while the camber keeps the edge engaged on firm snow. The rocker and taper make the ski much easier to release than a traditional directional carver, and the swallowtail gives the tail some freedom at the end of the turn rather than locking you into one line. The -5 cm mounting point puts you in a more centered, balanced position, which suits the ski's whole attitude. Underfoot, the flex has enough support to make the ski feel crisp and energetic; the poplar core and fiberglass keep it lively, while the full-length carbon adds some backbone without turning it into a heavy, metal-laminated charger.

This is the ski for skiing the mountain a little differently. Lay it over on the groomer, then stop carving and start slashing. Take it into the trees, keep the turns short, stay loose and let the ski pivot underneath you. In softer snow, it likes a more centered, two-footed style rather than being driven hard off one downhill ski. That surfy, smeary character is where the Vena Cor separates itself from most 100 mm skis. It isn't a powder ski and it isn't a big-mountain charger. It is something much more entertaining: a freestyle-minded freeride ski that can genuinely carve. If you like skis that give you options instead of telling you exactly where the next turn has to go, this one is seriously cool.

Who is this ski for?

The Vena Cor is for the skier who thinks a good run should have more than one gear. You can carve it, but you can also slash it. You can take it into soft snow, but you don't have to wait for a powder day to have fun on it. It will particularly suit progressive skiers, freestyle-influenced freeriders and anyone who likes a centered stance, short turns and a ski that can be redirected rather than simply driven.

It won't replace a dedicated powder ski when the snow gets properly deep, and it isn't the choice for someone whose idea of fun is pointing a stiff ski straight down a wide-open face. That's not what this thing is about. The Vena Cor is about being creative with the terrain—and having a ski underneath you that is happy to play along.
