Roxy Shima 106 (model 16/17)
The Roxy Shima 106 is a playful women's freeride ski for beginner to intermediate skiers who want to spend more time away from the groomed runs. With a 106 mm waist and double rocker, it offers plenty of flotation in soft snow while the camber underfoot keeps it surprisingly capable on groomers.
The sandwich construction combines a poplar and beech wood core with fibreglass. The 5-point shape and camber provide solid edge grip, while rocker in both the tip and tail makes turn initiation easier and helps the ski stay on top of softer snow. Despite its width, it does not feel particularly cumbersome.
Ease of handling is one of its biggest strengths. Testing described it as a very accessible ski that is quick to get used to. Even on groomers, the 106 mm waist does not make turning difficult and the ski retains good edge grip. Off piste, the width and double rocker come into their own. It is not designed for aggressive, high-speed freeriding, but for playful powder skiing and building confidence in deeper snow, it works very well.
The Shima 106 therefore makes sense for a skier looking for a forgiving freeride ski with plenty of flotation without giving up too much piste performance. If maximum speed and hard charging are the priority, there are more powerful options. If the goal is simply to have fun and make the transition from groomers to powder easier, the Shima 106 is a very good fit.
